Who knew there were castles in the USA? Hearst Castle was built upon a massive mountain in the mid- 1900's...and though it was technically never "completed" you wouldn't be able to tell by walking around the estate. It is palatial (obviously)...with breathtaking views and beautiful architecture. Hearst was inspired by his travels to Europe...primarily Spain and Italy, and the interior features grand ceilings with Gothic architecture and underlying references to royalty (though he was not of royal descent).
We spent hours roaming the "castle" exteriors and taking in all of the beautiful views on the sunny, day. It sparked my imagination for a life I've dreamt of as a little girl...a beautiful castle atop the land with the best views for miles...a girl can dream right? :)
